What makes Suzuki different from traditional lessons?
Suzuki is a philosophy and an approach to learning an instrument based on the Shinichi Suzuki Method. Suzuki students begin their studies at a very young age. We believe that every child can learn and that each student can achieve excellence when given the proper learning environment and nurture.

The 7 key factors to our approach:
1. Beginning early
2. Learning by ear, then music reading when ready
3. Parental involvement
4. Repertoire based approach, learning skills though the music
5. Positive reinforcement
6. Group lessons and performances
7. Character development

How do I know if my child is ready to start learning an instrument?

Your child might be ready if they:
-
Demonstrate interest in music
-
Can sit through a story being read to them
-
Can answer basic yes and no questions
-
Have the ability to follow directions from an adult that is not their parent
Before joining the program, your child will have a readiness assessment with our Education Coordinator. Commitment as a parent and willingness to support the practice routine at home will be vital to the child's success.

Once you are accepted into the program, you will be assigned to a private teacher, who will contact you about scheduling a weekly lesson at a mutually convenient time.

Structure and Lessons
-
Students in the program receive a private lesson each week and a group class weekly or biweekly (depending on age/stage), during the school year months. Because we believe that group class is an integral part to the Suzuki Method and to the success of your child, we do not have an option for private lessons only.
-
In the first year, lessons are 30 minutes each week. Group lessons are typically 30-45 minutes long. At the beginning, practice will be 10 minutes or less but as the student progresses, that will increase.
-
Winter break and summer lessons are encouraged and are based on the teacher’s availability.
Can I observe a lesson or class before we join the program?
Yes! We have several Open House events throughout the school year. If you are unable to attend an Open House we are happy to set up a time for you to come observe.

Caregiver and Family Involvement
We refer to all Suzuki Caregivers as the “Practice Partner”. Your most important job is to help create a positive environment for your child to succeed. You will attend all lessons and group classes with full attention. You will practice with your child and be on time to all lessons, classes, and performances.
The Practice Partner will learn the basics of the instrument their child is playing. You do not need to have any musical experience to be a great practice partner. The teacher will guide you through specific exercises and ways to practice so that you can best support your child.
Siblings are more than welcome to attend lessons and classes. We just ask that they have something quiet to do to entertain themselves.
Instrument and Materials
The student’s family/caregivers are responsible for the purchase of the instrument, books, and other materials.

You do not need an instrument for the first lesson.
We ask that you do not give your child an instrument before starting formal lessons. Students will start on box instruments and a wooden bow. Once they can complete a set of activities, they earn their real instrument. At that time your teacher can help with sizing and rental information.

Each student will need the Suzuki recordings for listening and the Suzuki book.
Listening to the recordings is a crucial part of the Suzuki Method. We are teaching the language of music and just like learning any language, repetition is vital. Listening develops ear training, musical memory, improves tone and technique, builds familiarity with repertoire, and inspires motivation and inspiration.

Each instrument has specific accessories that are needed in addition to the instrument.

Violin and Viola students:
Chin rests, shoulder rests, strings, or rosin. (Some of these are included in your rental)
Cello students:
Height specific chair, rock stop, a Twinkle Bow and strings/rosin.
Guitar students:
Height specific chair and a foot rest.
